The Lead Dog
Most dogs love their walks, don’t they? Just about every dog I know will show excitement when you say that word! It’s a time to explore the world, greet their friends and get some exercise. But it’s also a wonderful opportunity for you to bond with your dog. It is one of the very best ways to show your dog that you are in charge of the relationship through very fun yet structured methods. To your dog, a walk is a hunting trip. Being predatory pack animals, dogs can view the walk as either an opportunity to lead the pack in the hunt or as a follower, taking instructions from you as the leader. The way you walk your dog sets the tone for your entire relationship, even when you come back in the home.
From a young age, your dog should be taught to walk nicely on a leash. A dog who pulls and strains is showing you that he is the leader of the hunt and you are simply just another member of the pack. And most dogs will assume this lead position if you do not show them otherwise. It is natural for a dog to look for a pack leader and if one is not present, the dog will take the lead.
Because each and every walk, or hunting trip, is a new opportunity to be the pack leader for either you or your dog, it is important that you are consistent with your actions. The beginning of the walk sets the tone. Always be sure that you go out the door first. A dog who charges out the door in front of you is surely going to lead the hunt! If it is too difficult for you to manage walking out the door first, then a simple “wait” or “stay” command once you are out of the door also can suffice to show your dog that you go first and are the leader.
